A number of individuals are affected by noise-induced hearing loss. In fact, research by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders shows that approximately 15 percent of Americans between the ages of 20 and 69—or 26 million individuals—suffer from high-frequency hearing loss which may be the direct result of over-exposure to loud noise.
Causes of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
There are tiny hair cells located within the inner ear that are responsible for converting sound energy into electrical signals. These signals are then sent to the brain and interpreted as sounds. Isolated sounds that are too loud and continuous exposure to loud noises can damage these hair cells, resulting in noise-induced hearing loss, or NIHL. Isolated sounds that emit between 120 and 150 decibels, such as explosions from firecrackers and small firearms, and repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 decibels may lead to NILH.
Symptoms of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
Exposure to a single intense noise can lead to immediate hearing loss which is usually accompanied by tinnitus, or a ringing in the ears. This hearing loss may be permanent, while the symptoms of tinnitus may subside over time. Damage to the inner ear from continuous exposure to loud noises tends to occur gradually, but can still lead to tinnitus and hearing loss. Individuals who are developing NILH from continuous noise exposure may have difficulty understanding others and feel like others are mumbling, even when they are speaking clearly.

By: Audigy Group - Affiliated with Dunshaw Hearing Aid Centers
The Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA) and the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) have confirmed that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has sent a letter to HealthInnovations’ CEO Dr. Lisa Tseng advising her that the company’s Online Hearing Test does not comply with FDA regulations. The company’s online hearing test is, according to the regulatory agency, a diagnostic device. To ensure safety and efficacy, such devices require clearance from the FDA before they are offered to the public, which the company has failed to obtain.
Audigy Group supports the Academies and other national and state organizations that have raised concerns about online hearing tests with the FDA. As an organization focused on delivering superior hearing care services, Audigy Group applauds the FDA in its decision. “Online tests fail to recognize the unique hearing needs of individual patients, and confiscate the responsibility of Audiologists to diagnose potentially serious underlying medical conditions,” says Audigy Group CEO Brandon Dawson. “Patients deserve a higher standard,” he explains, “and an opportunity to achieve success in their pursuit of better hearing that online tests simply cannot provide.”

Individuals who suffer from any level of hearing loss will immediately experience the benefits from investing in a hearing aid.
This video from the Johnson and Johnson Health Channel follows one patient as he seeks treatment for his hearing loss. After being diagnosed with moderate-to-severe high frequency hearing loss, the patient was prescribed a specialized, behind-the-ear hearing aid which amplifies certain pitch levels—allowing him to hear sounds he had been missing for over 20 years. Check out this video clip to learn more about his experience.
